Ashe County grows more Christmas trees than any county in America. More than 12,000 acres of them — over 20 million trees in the ground, worth about $154 million a year to this county, by NC Cooperative Extension's figures. North Carolina is the nation's top Fraser fir state, and a fir takes seven to ten years to grow from a seedling to the tree in your living room. NC growers have sent the White House Blue Room tree 16 times — and one of the farms on this list, Mistletoe Meadows, sent the 2007 tree.
November is when the county opens its gates. Families drive up from Charlotte, Raleigh, and the Triad to walk the rows and cut their own. If that's your plan this year, here's every choose-and-cut farm in the county I could verify for the 2026 season — opening dates, hours, phone numbers, and what each one offers.
One rule before you go: call the farm first. Farm hours change with the weather, and a farm that sells out of a size can close early. Every farm below has its phone number listed — a two-minute call beats a wasted drive up the mountain. Days and hours here were posted by the farms themselves or the NC Christmas Tree Association for the 2026 season, checked November 1, 2026.
Every farm in this guide, pinned. The first group is confirmed for the 2026 season. The second group hadn't posted its 2026 days when this guide was checked — so call first, which is the rule for every farm here anyway. Tap a pin for the farm's address and phone number, or open the map in Google Maps for directions.

One change to know: Clark's Evergreens in Fleetwood, a longtime choose-and-cut stop, has been reported closed for the 2026 season.
You walk the field, pick your tree, and cut it — every farm here provides saws, and most will shake out the loose needles and bale the tree in netting for the ride home. A few practical notes from a local:
Measure first. Ceiling height, and the width of the spot. A tree that looks modest in a field looks enormous in a living room. It happens to somebody every year.
Go early for choice. The best fields get walked hard the first two weekends. By mid-December some farms are down to what's left.
Bring gloves and a backup payment. Most farms take cards now. Not all do, and mountain cell service is what it is.
Fresh-cut care. Get the tree in water the day you bring it home — a fresh cut face on the trunk base helps it drink — and it'll stay fresh well past New Year's.
The first farm opens Saturday, November 14 (C and J Christmas Trees in Todd). Most farms open the weekend before Thanksgiving, November 20–22, and the season runs into December — Shady Rest in Glendale Springs cuts through Christmas Eve. The best selection goes early; many farms are picked over by mid-December.
Most farms take walk-ins on their posted days. A few open on extra days by appointment — Mistletoe Meadows is one. Either way, call before you go: hours change with the weather and with how fast the trees sell.
Each farm sets its own prices, usually by height and species. As one published example, Mistletoe Meadows lists an average 6 to 7 foot tree at $85 this season. Call the farm you're visiting for its current price list before you drive out.
Measure your ceiling height before you leave home — trees look smaller standing in a field. Most farms provide saws and will shake and bale your tree. Bring gloves, and cash as a backup: many farms take cards, but not all of them do. One more reason to call ahead.
Fair warning: a lot of people first see this county on a tree run in November, and some of them start wondering what it would cost to stay. If that thought crosses your mind on the drive home, start with my guide to the four counties — Ashe, Alleghany, Avery, and Watauga each have their own character — and if it's land you're picturing a tree farm of your own on, my land buying guide covers what to check before you buy mountain ground.
